Providence Baptist Church Scholarship Guidelines
Charles and Joan Foster Scholarship
Guidelines and Requirements
Providence Baptist Church (PBC) sponsors scholarships to help Christian students seeking financial assistance in obtaining an education. Notice of the scholarship availability will be advertised through the use of the PBC church newsletter, website or social media page, with local high school (Public and Private) guidance departments (specifically, Appomattox HS, Randolph-Henry HS, William-Campbell HS, Rustburg HS, & Cornerstone Christian Academy) and through other means as determined appropriate by the scholarship committee annually.
A minimum level of funding for each scholarship is set by these guidelines at $1,000 per year. Since the amount available for scholarships is appropriated annually, the scholarship committee will meet, after the fund is appropriated, and before applications are received, to determine the number and the amount of scholarships that can reasonably be awarded based on the funds that have been allocated. Because some institutions reduce needs-based financial aid when private scholarships are applied directly to a student’s account, the scholarship recipient may elect to have this scholarship paid directly to them upon the successful completion of their first term. It will be the scholarship recipient’s responsibility to provide documentation (transcript, grades, schedule for upcoming term) to the scholarship committee. This documentation will not be required of students receiving a scholarship renewal.
The scholarship committee is responsible for screening and processing all applications and notifying applicants of the committee’s decision by May 30th. While applications will be considered from all applicants who meet the requirements listed below, priority will be given to applicants who are active* members of Providence Baptist Church. Scholarship grantees may re-apply annually for consideration. Scholarship committee members shall not participate in the consideration, discussion, or decision pertaining to a relative’s (by birth or marriage) scholarship application. For this reason, the scholarship committee should include at least three (3) members who are unrelated to one another.
The applicant must:
be a publicly professing Christian and an active* member of a church.
be pursuing any level of post high school education.
be or have been a resident, student, or church member within one of the following counties: Charlotte, Campbell, or Appomattox.
be willing to grant an interview if requested by the scholarship committee.
be in good academic standing as evidenced by an academic transcript (if currently enrolled in school).
include three (3) written references (with referent’s handwritten signature). At least one reference should address the applicant’s Christian dedication, and active* role in their church. At least one reference should be able to address the applicant’s educational goals, current academics, or potential as a student. At least one reference should be able to address the applicant’s involvement in community activities. Applicants should choose individuals to provide references that are non-relatives and provide them with pre-addressed, stamped, envelopes to be returned to the committee by U.S. Mail. (Providence Baptist Church Scholarship Committee, P.O. Box 116, Red House, VA 23963). (October 2017)
